2d and 3d digital animation, system developed in Touchdesigner, single-channel video, 50" 4K screen

The project uses unedited photographs of nature taken in a region of volcanic activity, where gases rising from underground colour the minerals and mountains in bright, almost unnatural hues.

The resolution of each landscape is converted into a particle grid. Pixels become particles. The pixels that make up geological structures are extracted like grains of sand, moving with wind forces, mixing and forming new entities. 2D landscapes transform into 3D forms. The work draws on a geological process in nature in which sand and dust are carried across the surface and gradually accumulate to form mountains over thousands of years. In the work, pixels become a new kind of natural substance – digital matter.
